Restart The Heart
How It Started My name is Rachel Adams. I am a 19-year-old Junior in college who has a unique story. In fact, I accomplished a lot during high school all while battling potentially life-threatening heart issues. It all started suddenly a few years ago with a funny feeling, a quick flutter, or a dizzy lightheaded episode during high-intensity level sports lasting no more than a few seconds. Without warning, my heart's electrical wiring went haywire and kept stopping for six seconds every time. My entire freshmen year was clouded with so many 911 calls and episodes where I was rushed to the nearest emergency room that I lost track. What started out as simple episodes grew into almost everyday occurrences lasting 20 to 40 minutes near unconsciousness and filled with crushing chest pain and a heart rate near 300. Superventricular Tachycardia (aka SVT) was the ultimate diagnosis that set up a journey with a test of faith, courage, and resilience to not let medical problems stop and define me. Three ablations later and a metal implant would ultimately save my life but the stress of cardiac medicines, blood thinners, and having to be near a defibrillator at all times had taken its toll. How It’s Going Throughout this ordeal, I have remained extremely positive and focused, even continuing my leadership role as a 5-year safety town instructor. I am now on the path to recovery and had only one episode in the past 5 years. I continue to challenge myself after taking college classes and honors during high school while excelling with straight A’s and maintaining a GPA over 4.2. Thankful for my outcome, I vowed to pay it forward and designed a logo for a nonprofit to raise money for defibrillators and awareness for Lindsay’s Law. Overall, I want to share my story and continue to give defibrillators to places that need them. Finally in March of 2022, I gave my first defibrillator to Hiram Farm which is a “community project born out of the desire to provide inspiration and meaningful work for the individual growth of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other developmental disabilities.” My next location I would like to donate at is Maggies Donuts in Hiram where my sister with special needs currently works. They’re an organization that offeres “differently-abled adults a meaningful place of employment within their community.” It is very important for me to help save lives one AED at a time.
